Library Card Look-ups Over the Phone

Posted by sachref on April 26, 2008

After a spirited conversation with a patron on Saturday, it seems necessary to remind staff that we DO NOT look up what a patron has checked out or on hold over the phone. We have no idea that the person providing us with a name and/or barcode is really that patron. So any patron inquiries along these lines must be made in person.

In the case on Saturday, the patron was finally appeased when I talked her through the process of how she can check her record via the online catalog and explained that yes, we can TAKE RESERVES over the phone with a name and barcode.

Any comments??

Foreign Language Collection – Relocation

Posted by sachref on April 25, 2008

The foreign language collections (Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, etc) have been moved from the main floor, to their new location at the far right of the upper stacks (after the biography section).

This has been done to make room for the Books on CD, which will soon be brought up from the Media Room and placed where the College and Career section currently resides.  Everything else will be shifted accordingly, but stay tuned to this space for updates.

The Life Lesson

Posted by sachref on April 25, 2008

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

“Not very long,” answered the Mexican.

“But then, why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” asked the American.

The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family.

The American asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. I have a full life.”

The American interrupted, “I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat.”

“And after that?” asked the Mexican.

“With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise.”

“How long would that take?” asked the Mexican.

“Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years,” replied the American.

“And after that?”

“Afterwards? Well my friend, that’s when it gets really interesting,” answered the American, laughing. “When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!”

“Millions? Really? And after that?” asked the Mexican.

“After that you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends.”

And the moral of this story is: ……… Know where you’re going in life… you may already be there.

Why are the cd-book shelves so sparse???

Posted by sachref on April 22, 2008

Patrons are beginning to notice that there is a lot of empty space on the cd-book shelves. Just this morning we fielded 3 inquires about this. There are several reasons for this:

1. As per instructions from the Director, all of the cassette books have been removed from the collection. Obviously, these items took up a lot more space than a CD-book does.

2. Non-fiction CD books when they are removed from the NEW designation, are interfiled with the Non-Fiction books in the Adult area stacks, not the Media Room. And Denise has just done a long-overdue weeding of those items listed in the catalog as NEW but are no longer new.

3. Linda Bova has ordered a lot of new CD-Books.

I want to know if you are all checking this blog, so I expect everyone to “Comment” on this post, even if it is just your initials to indicate you have read it.

Mapjack is currently limited to only San Francisco, Sausalito and Chiang Mai, Thailand, but the imagery is beautifully hi-res, with extra features too.
