Last Minute Conficker Virus Guide

Posted by sachref on March 31, 2009

burn“Tomorrow — April 1 — is D-Day for Conficker, as whatever nasty payload it’s packing is currently set to activate. What happens come midnight is a mystery: Will it turn the millions of infected computers into spam-sending zombie robots? Or will it start capturing everything you type — passwords, credit card numbers, etc. — and send that information back to its masters?

No one knows, but we’ll probably find out soon.”   Full Story

REMINDER

Posted by sachref on March 31, 2009

exclamation_pointThis is just a reminder that all items pulled from the shelf for pickup here at Sachem (by anyone from any library) MUST be given to a full-time Circulation Clerk so that the reserve can be placed in Millenium for the patron.  DO NOT put the items on the reserve shelf yourself.  After the reserve is placed on the item, the clerk will file it with the reserves to be picked up.  Be sure to get the patron’s barcode number for the reserve.  Thanx!

One of the rooms in the Mars 500 experimental chamber

“The Mars 500 experiment here in Moscow will focus on the psychological difficulties of prolonged isolation and claustrophobia…It’s a real probability that a flight to Mars would fail if the very serious problem of isolation is not investigated first,” says Oliver Knickel, an army engineer from Germany who is one of the volunteer “astronauts” for the experiment. “    Full Story

Posted by sachref on March 29, 2009

“Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs introduced a new Apple product he said would “revolutionize” the process of unveiling new products throughout the world. The iLaunch, as the new product is called, was then raised up from below the stage, prompting the audience of technology journalists, developers, and self-professed “Apple fanatics” to burst into a five-minute standing ovation.

“…Before today, I couldn’t imagine paying $12,000 for a product-unveiling product,” CNET editor Jasmine France said after the presentation. “Now I can’t imagine living without it.”    Full Story

Jeff Bezos Works In Kentucky Distribution Center For A Week

Posted by sachref on March 28, 2009

“Jeff Bezos is spending this week working in an Amazon distribution center in Lexington, Kentucky.  He apparently wants to see what it’s like to be a rank-and-file Amazon employee.  More CEOs should try that once in a while.

(Note that this is not an hour with the press entourage on a factory floor.  It’s a week, 3000 miles away from home, with no cameras allowed.)

Local Amazon employees say Bezos is working in the warehouse with the company’s hourly employees to see what they do and hear their comments about their work.”

Keyword Search change

Posted by sachref on March 25, 2009

clap-animated-animation-clap-smileyIn order to fix our problem with keyword searching promptly, PALS suggested we change our Keyword Search to the Advanced Keyword Search instead.  This means when you choose to do a Keyword Search, in addition to the search box you will have choices below the box to pre-limit your search by library, material type, etc.  If you just want to do a basic keyword search, enter your search terms in the box and click ‘Go.’  You can ignore the pre-limiters, you do not need to use them.  However, they will be available if you choose to make use of them.  If anyone has any questions, please see me.  -D.

New Catalog Problem

Posted by sachref on March 25, 2009

orange_coneWe are  currently experiencing problems with Keyword searching in the Staff WebOPAC.  When you attempt to do a keyword search in the Staff WebOPAC, and you are scoped to Sachem – you get tons of hits that all say ‘No Copies Available.’  These hits are all items at other libraries.  The Staff WebOPAC does not appear to be scoping properly during Keyword searches.  Only items with copy information showing are owned by Sachem.  I have informed PALS about this problem and they have passed it on to Innovative.  Until a fix is found, I am afraid we will have to work through it.  Any questions, please feel free to ask me.  -D.

Heart Attack During Brain Surgery

Posted by sachref on March 25, 2009

“An Italian doctor completed a brain operation despite having a heart attack.  Surgeon Claudio Vitale started feeling pains in his chest half way through the operation but refused to stop despite his team’s urging and the pain worsening.  After the surgery, he had an angioplasty to treat his attack.

Vitale insists he’s not a hero, but that he couldn’t leave the patient “at such a delicate moment.”  Both doctor and patient are recovering.”   Full Story
